How To Figure Out How Many Words Per Minute You Type
Would you like to be much more productive as a writer? It'due south possible, and you lot don't have to plough into a machine or ingest huge amounts of caffeine to practice information technology. (Although a bit of coffee might help goose your enthusiasm.)
If you're like me, you wouldn't listen increasing your writing output and so you can become more than books and information products to market place.
This aspiration naturally leads to the question, "How much content can I reasonably expect to produce?" The best way to quantify information technology is to observe out how many words yous really crank out per hr.
I wondered the aforementioned thing recently.
And so I set out to uncover what my real writing speed is. I'thou happy to share with yous the results and what I learned. And I encourage you to go through this same procedure to determine your own writing production level.
Concluding month, over a nine-mean solar day flow, I did seven split writing sessions of about an hour each.
I know that some writers can sit for hours on terminate through marathon writing sessions. While I've done that in the by, these days I find I'm more effective when I focus on writing for an 60 minutes or so at a fourth dimension.
The results: My grand full for all vii hours added upwards to 4,885 words.
That's an average of most 700 words per hour. Keen. There are people who write a lot faster, merely I was pretty happy with that number.
My slowest writing session was just 465 words an hour, while I cranked out more 1,000 words during my nigh productive 60 minutes.
Hither's what I learned:
- My lowest discussion counts came during sessions when I was less prepared and more than distracted.
- When I had a clear outline of the section I was working on, I could get into it faster and brand more progress.
- The more than I wrote consistently day later 24-hour interval, the easier it was to become into a state of menstruum. Of grade, I knew this from previous experience (and that's why I kick myself for not writing on a more regular schedule).
- The longer the time in between writing sessions on the same volume, the more energy you lot must expend to remind yourself where you lot left off and go back into the flow.
- With consequent focus and training, I experience confident I could probably up my hourly average to 900 or ane,000 words.
Now allow's interpret this into the frequency with which you can publish new books!
To demonstrate, I'll apply it to my situation…
If my goal is to release more titles, here's what the math looks similar related to my writing time and give-and-take count:
Let's be pocket-sized and say I can devote two hours a day, four days a calendar week, to working on a current book project.
That's eight hours a week of solid writing. If I use 800 words per hour every bit my boilerplate, that equals about vi,500 words per week.
In just three weeks I'd take enough content for a nearly xx,000-word ebook. In five weeks of consistent effort that number would rise to 32,000 words – enough for a small paperback.
If 50,000 words was my goal, that should exist easily achievable in ii months or less.
Of form, I realize that editing can easily reduce these numbers and rewrites can add time to the process. Only I hope y'all agree that measuring where you are with your hourly give-and-take count gives you lot a way to determine your potential output.
Accept you measured how many words per hour you write? Do you see the benefit of writing more in less fourth dimension? What are the drawbacks of this approach?
I welcome your comments beneath.
